Trauma (Trauma focused CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Has your child experienced a car accident, loss of a loved one, a hospitalization, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or any other traumatic event? Has your child begun acting differently than their typical self and you are unsure why? TF-CBT may be a solution for you and your child.

What is TF-CBT?

  • Evidence-based treatment for children and their caregivers.
  • Structured sessions so you and your child know what to expect.
  • Aims to address strong emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with traumatic events.
  • Research-proven to be effective for both single and multiple traumatic events.
  • Typically ranges between 8 to 25 sessions.
  • Children between 3 – 18 years old can enroll.

Trauma

TF-CBT is a therapy that seeks to help children, adolescents, and their parents or caregivers learn, process, and heal from life’s most difficult circumstances. The fallout from a traumatic event or abuse at the expense of a child can be some of the most challenging and frustrating situations a caregiver, and child, experience. At Shiloh, we are here to walk alongside you and your child in healing from life’s darkest and most sensitive moments.

Is TF-CBT right for me and my child? At your intake session, your therapist will work with you and your child to assess their trauma symptomology, history, behavior, and emotional difficulties. Above all, many of your child’s difficulties and challenges are likely reactions to their trauma or abuse and can be addressed. In many cases, TF-CBT can begin after previous therapies have not worked, or simply in response to an unforeseen circumstance occurring. TF-CBT can also be a stand-alone treatment option without any previous therapy.

TF-CBT can work for Foster, Adoptive, or Extended Family Members

If you are not your child’s biological parent, do not worry, any caregiver can take part in TF-CBT. TF-CBT is a collaborative model that teaches and supports caregivers in learning about their child’s trauma, learning new ways to support their child, learning effective parenting strategies, and healing themselves after their child’s traumatic event. Caregivers, you are the most important person in your child’s life, and you and your child’s relationship and healing are our priority here at Shiloh.

Regardless of the situation or specifics, your therapist at Shiloh is here to provide you and your family with the best options for your specific circumstance. If you are unsure of whether your child’s situation or circumstance is in response to a traumatic event, we are here to assist you in finding the healing you and your child deserve.
